Thai massage (sometimes called Thai yoga massage) is generally more rigorous than classical forms of massage. Thai massage is typically given with the recipient lying on a floor mat, fully clothed. There is a standard procedure and rhythm to the massage, generally following the Sen energy lines on the body (the Sen are comparable to Chinese meridians). In some gestures, the therapist's legs and feet are used to fixate the body or limbs of the recipient. In other gestures, hands fixate the body, while the feet do the massaging. Usually no oils or lotions are applied, but sometimes a hot herbal compress is used to relax and warm the body.

A Thai massage session usually proceeds very slowly (sometimes for more than two hours), in a choreographed "dance" as the practitioner manipulates the recipient's body around the mat, creating a relaxed, meditative state for both. A full course of Thai massage can be very thorough, including pulling toes, fingers, ears, etc.; walking on the back; cracking the knuckles; arching the back in a rolling motion, etc.

The purpose of Thai massage is to bring the body, mind, and spirit into a state of harmonious balance, providing an opportunity for self-healing. The benefits enjoyed from a Thai massage session may include the following: deep relaxation, stress relief, warmed and stretched muscles, healing energy flow, greater flexibility, increased and focused energy levels, relief from sore muscles and joints, detoxification, and a feeling of confidence and well-being.
